Jefferson Democrat
Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri

WEDNESDAY, 11 JUNE 1884

The LaBarque correspondent of the Pacific City Herald pays the following
tribute to a good man, who has gone "beyond the river". The intelligence of the
death of Patrick CASHELS, Recorder of this county, cast a cloud of sorrow over
this entire community. Mr. CASHELS was well and favorably known here, having
spent five years among us, engaged as teacher of our public school, in which
capacity he labored with untiring zeal and gained a reputation which time
cannot obliterate. Mr. CASHELS was a gentleman in every particular, and by his
sterling qualities and great moral worth, gained the respect and esteem of all who
knew him. His death is deeply mourned by the people of this community, who
testified to their sorrow for deceased by joining in the vast procession of
sorrowing friends, from far and near, that followed his remains to their last
resting place.

WEDNESDAY, 18 JUNE 1884

Last week one of Otto HERMANN's children died, so we learn.

Mr. R. BURROUGHS started last week for California, with a view of taking his
family out there to live, if he finds a location to suit him.

On the 5th Sunday in this month Rev. Wm. McKAY will preach the funeral of
John W. STEPHENS, at Pilgrim Rest church on Dry Creek.

Mrs. Henry MILLER of Head's Creek, stepped on a small oil can, used for
oiling her sewing machine, and ran the point of it clear through her foot. Dr.
WILLIAMS was called in to extract it, and the wound is very painful.

James STRICKLAND, of De Soto, lost two children last week. The doctors
pronounced the disease a combination of measles and whooping cough. It is a sad
affliction friend STRICKLAND and he has our sympathy.

Licensed to Marry - Henry RINKE and Lizzie RUTLEGE, Jesse D. WAGGENER and
Anna HENNER(?), John M. CUNNINGHAM and Sophia A. MUMMERT, John HELLER and
Catharine BRIMER, Andrew WEBER and Mary C. SCHAEFFER, Albert MOON and Mary MOOSEY.

Mr. John M. CUNNINGHAM and Miss Sophia MUMMERT of De Soto, were married on
the 12th inst., by Rev. J.C. DOWNER. A large number of guests were present at
the reception, and the wedding presents were beautiful, numerous and valuable.

Mr. STEFFAN, residing three miles south of here, buried one of his children
last week, and we learn that several more of his family are afflicted with
scarlet fever. Mr. S. not many months since moved to this from St. Louis county.
We extend our sympathies.

Jesse D. WAGGENER, late deputy Sheriff, and Anna KENNER, daughter of W.B.
KENNER of near Crystal City, were married last Wednesday, the 11th inst., at the
St. James hotel, St. Louis, Rev. SMART officiated. They left next morning for
Sulphur Springs, Tex., where they expect to make their home. Jesse was one of
our most popular young men, and we are sorry he has left the county. We wish
him and his wife success, wherever they may go.

DEATHS and BIRTHS - The following deaths were reported the past week:
Date Name Age
May 22 Geo. BYRNS of Valle Mines 36 years.

BIRTHS
Date Name of mother Sex
Dec. 31 Mrs. Charles D. WARNE boy
April 20 Mrs. Henderson HILL girl

The wedding of Mr. Robert DENHOLM to Miss Lydia DRAKE took place, at the
residence of the bride's mother, on Thursday night, and was a brilliant affair. A
number of invited guests were present, and the happy couple were the
recipients of some very beautiful presents. Hearing the sounds of tin-pan music
coming from the direction of Crystal City, last Friday night, we hastily proceeded
to that town, and at a respectable distance listened to the old-fashioned
method of serenading in its most laughable form. The kids were having their fun.
