ANSWER TO BELOW:

Sue,
You said there was a conflict on his date of birth but you really didn't
clear that matter up too well as to what the discrepancy was so I tried the WWI
Draft Registrations hoping that he had filled one out before he died.

I filled in only the name of Paul Adams and the month of birth as March.
This is the only one that came up as viable. The month and the date were the
same but the year was off, it was 1887 and not 1886. This is not an unusual
occurrence by the way (grin).

States he has a wife and child (no name.....sorry). It was dated June 5,
1917 in Los Angeles California. Further states he was born New York City and
that he was employed as a Bellboy at the Hotel Angelus at Spring and Fourth
Street.

Description says: Medium Height; Medium Build; Blue Eyes; Black Hair.

If you think this might be him let me know and I'll send you the image in a
download.
Gretchen

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

From: "SUE ADAMS" <ADAMSS74@msn.com>
Subject: genealogy focus

I want to work on my genealogy and am not sure where to start. I have
several generations of ancestors listed on both my husband's side and mine, but not
much documentation. Do I start on the "tail end" and push back farther or
(starting with the line I'm most interested in) begin at the most recent and
verify all information? If verifying, how many and what type of resources are
sufficient? It seems overwhelming.

We also have a major brick wall on my husband's side. His grandfather was
Paul Adams, junior. He said he was a Romanian gypsy king from New York. He gave
his birth date as March 22, 1886, but that conflicts with the marriage
certificate. He married in 1915 in Utah, died in the 1918 influenza epidemic. We
have some news clippings from various newspapers (no newspaper names, or
dates) as he walked across America in 1912 on a dare/bet with the Washington Post
paper. Family lore said he won the bet. He did not tell his wife much about
his family, including his mother's maiden name. His mother was a midwife. I
have a copy of both the marriage application and certificate, his death
certificate, copies of the news clippings. Neither the marriage documents nor the
death certificate give any information on his family. Comments written during
his walk across America mention brothers who are Eagles, that he knew 4
languages and "could sing and dance quite handily." He sounds very colo!
rful.
I've checked some birth records in New York, some census records, but want
to attack the problem more methodically.
Any suggestions on specific New York sources, places for information on
gypsies, or other hints would be greatly appreciated.
