Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Civil War Veterans
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

Beside checking NARA for military records, pension records and bounty
land, I found information about Civil War veterans in the State
Adjutant General's offices. My ancestor fought with the Illinois
troops...actually lived in Wisconsin...and the Adjutant General in
the State Capital had his enlistment record telling where he was
living at the time, his age, married or not, place of birth, and
other info I did not get in his pension file from NARA.

Archives at the State Library also have military records. I read
actual reports written from the field during the Civil War several
ancestors who served with the Iowa troops. Most of this info is from
military officers of a particular unit.
