Subject: [ROOTS-L] Pension for Civil War Substutute

SouthPawTgilly recently wrote:

Do you happen to know if the person who paid to have someone take his
military duty for him was eligible for a pension or did it go to the man who did the
fighting?

My 2g Grandfather, Hope Hendrickson, was a substitute and was paid for taking
the place of an Aug K. Lane in 1863 as reported . Years later, he applied for
a disability pension for an injury he claimed he suffered as a soldier. The
pension was denied on the basis of no such injury being reported in his
military records. . However, after his death in 1896 at the age of 77, his wife
Isabella, applied for and received a pension as the widow of a Civil War soldier.

It would appear that the answer to your question is that pension benefits
were payable to the man who did the fighting. You might get confirmation in the
military records of your 2g grandfather by writing to:

GENERAL REFERENCE BRANCH
NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION

Ask for both pension records amd military records
