Jefferson Democrat
Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri

WEDNESDAY, 21 MAY 1884

It is astonishing how little regard some persons have for the feelings of
others. About a month ago a vacancy was anticipated in Treasurer's office of
Perry County, Missouri, and some fellow with more cheek than decency secured a
commission for the position from the Governor before the vacancy actually
occured. At noon last Saturday, the sad news of Recorder CASHELS' death reached
here, and immediately a petition was circulated for a man who wanted to be
appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr. CASHELS was one of God's noblemen and, in, our
opinion, entitled to more respect than that.

Mrs. Amanda REECE of Meramec township, was buried in the Hillsboro cemetery
last Friday. She was a daughter of the late Dennis ARMSTRONG, one of the old
residents of Hillsboro. She had been a widow 27 years and leaves one child, a
son, one of the most respectable young men of the county. Mrs. REECE's last
few years have been years of suffering and pain, she having been afflicted with
a cancer on her breast; but the Christian patience and resignation with which
she bore her suffering has been a source of astonishment to all who knew her.
Rev. W. STEPHENS officiated at her funeral, and he could well say that she
had gone to that rest and enjoyment prepared for Christ's followers. On behalf
of the family and relatives we return thanks to their neighbors and friends
for the kindness and assistance constantly offered and rendered during the long
sufferings of the deceased.

When we spoke last week of the illness of Recorder Patrick CASHELS, we had no
idea that his end was so near, but had hopes that he would soon be well
again. The disease had too firm a hold, though, and he was in a worse condition
than his friends supposed. On the evening of the 12th inst., a telegram came
for his wife, and as it was too late for the trains, Mr. Jos. HOEKEN took Mrs.
C. to St. Louis in his buggy. They arrived a t the hospital at three the next
morning and found that the last rites of the church had already been
administered, and it was then known that there were no hopes of his recovery. He died
on Saturday at 11 a.m., and was buried Monday at the Stone Church, near
Catawissa. Mr. CASHELS was very popular among those who knew him best. He was a
man who attended strictly to his own business and never interfered with the
affairs of others.

CIRCUIT COURT - Heinrich LINDHOFF, Wm. BROWN and Thomas WATSON took out
citizen papers.

Wm. T. BEAL was found guilty of felonious assault on Willis DEARING and
fined$75. The court afterwards agreed to reduce the fine to $5, provided costs and
all are paid.

Hester Ann OAKES was granted divorce from Elijah OAKES. Cause - abandonment.

Mary LANDOLF vs.. Fred. LANDOLF judgment for $50 alimony.
