Subject: [ROOTS-L] Civil War - pay for sub

My great-great-grandfather was paid to take another man's place.  He was a new arrival from Germany and probably could use the money - $400.  Also, he had recently fought in a war in Germany, and was not married..  On his Discharge, a line entitled 'Bounty' is filled in '$100.'  I don't know if this meant he was still owed by the man for whom he was a sub.
I have copies of his records from The National Archives.
