Subject: [ROOTS-L] MILITARY RECORDS/MEDALS - WWII

Subject: Military Records/Medals - WWII

Good evening,

I need some guidance in trying to find my grandfather's WWII service
records and any medals he may have been eligible to receive.

About 10 years ago, I mailed in a request (to where, I cannot remember) for
his records and received a post card back saying that his war record was
destroyed in a fire in 1975, or something like that. I wish I'd kept that post
card.

Anyway, all I know about him is that he flew a glider over Normandy on D
Day and that he was a lieutenant. I think I have his military card with his
picture and thumbprint on it.

Can anyone guide me in the right direction? At the very least, I'd like to
know about the medals.

  Thank you very much. :)

ANSWER
-----------------------

I had the same reply and problem. I composed a very polite and professional
letter of request and I took/mailed ALL the information that I did have
regarding the WWII relative to my state Representative (in my case it was
Representative Hinchey, NY) (they always have an office around where you live). It took
some time for a reply, which I received directly from my state Represent
ative, but he did get results. It seems whoever is doing the *look up* just gives
everyone the standard reply about the fire, but there are other sources that
this information can be gotten from, they just have to do a little work to
complete it (our tax dollars at work - ha ha). They should also inform you of
where to get a *one time replacement* of any medals, etc. the WWII person
received. Since Representative Hinchey did get involved in this matter for me, after
about a week of receiving the records I received the replacement medals for
my father.

I might add that I did include ID, Death Certificates, etc. with my request
(to prove that I was related and the person had died)

After Representative Hinchey forwarded me the information, I wrote him a
Thank You. I might add this is a MUST. I have requested the help of my
Representative a number of times, and each time was a success.

I might add, if you live in NYS don't try Ms. Clinton - she has a beautiful
web site, etc., but that is as far as it goes - you won't get a thing from her
(guess she is too busy keeping an eye on Billy, you won't even get a reply
that your message, etc. was received. My opinion only, but I am anti Ms. Clinton
and please no remarks have to be made to this mailing list about MY OPINION,
as I will not change it - and yes, I am of the female gender!

I hope this helped you out and good luck with your research.

Jan
