He was born 3 September1762 in Northern Ireland near Belfast and that's where his father died , leaving James and his older sister, Margaret. His mother brought James, age 9, and his sister, Margaret, to America about 1771 landing in Delaware, perhaps at Wilmington They were Quakers and James was bound out to Quaker John Gibson where he learned to be a miller and when he served his time, he learned to be a weaver. John Gibson had a grist mill and sawmills and a large farm on Brandywine Creek, Delaware. Would a Quaker of that time and that well-to-do have kept records and would his records have details about those who were bound to him? When James Hannah was bound to Gibson, James' mother and sister Margaret moved to "A distant part of the country", somewhere in Pennsylvania. James later mentioned visiting her a few times. James Hannah married Sarah Gregg about 1788. Sarah was born 16 Sept.1769 New Castle County, Christiana Hundred, Delaware. They lived in New Castle, Del., until 1795 when they and their children Samuel, Peggy (Margaret), Polly (Mary) and Abraham moved to Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Three more children, Anne, Hugh and William were born in Fayette Co. They stayed in Fayette County area until they all moved to Wayne County, Indiana, in 1819. Could James Hannah's mother's name have been Margaret like her daughter? Or wouldn't James have named one of his daughters after his mother. And she would be Mary, or Anne. Are there any lists of passengers on ships coming in that long ago? Are there any Quaker records in Fayette County, PA, dating back to 1772 which might mention a widow with the last name of Hannah and a daughter Margaret. ??? I am so eager to find the story of this woman. I have lots of info on the lives and deaths of families of James and Sarah (Gregg) Hannah to share. --Any advice, help or information will be greatly appreciated. Liz Redar abeth@netnitco.net
