Subject: [ROOTS-L] ROOTS-L Digest V06 #114 - Message #12

Hello List,
In regard to the message below....
This very day I was invited to speak to two 6th grade classes, about history
and why it was important to them. When it appeared that their attention
seemed to drift after a few minutes, I asked if they remembered when they
were in the Civil War. Of course they looked at me as though they thought I
had lost my mind, and all said that couldn't possibly be true.

I explained that if their ancestors were present, a part of them also was
there in their ancestors genes, even though they weren't really there. I
went on to tell them how they were connected through genetics, with a part
of their ancestors. That brought up a good discussion about genealogy, and
how it pertained to them. They were very interested in the ancestor chart
for my granddaughters, I took with me.

The opportunity came about, because I heard my twin granddaughters talking
about studying the Civil War.
I then sent their class, a copy of my grandfathers discharge paper, and some
other information about his service in the war. Their teacher then asked if
I would talk to the class about the subject. I found the class very
interested in finding information about their ancestors. The questions they
asked, were all about how to find information on their own families
genealogy. I was encouraged by the strong interest in our favorite subject!

When I asked how many had grandparents still living, I think every hand in
the room went up. The same question about any great grandparents living,
brought almost half the hands up. I was surprised at the number that did.
I explained that this was their best chance of building a background of
information, to start their research. I hope I started a lifetime of
interest in genealogy, with a few of the students. Maybe a some of our
children will care about the research we have done!
Elvin
