Subject: [ROOTS-L] Nickname for Sarah
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

Another thought about a nickname for "Sarah" - my grandmother's baby
sister was named Anna E. on her birth record in 1881 but after her
father died in 1882, she was adopted out. The adoption record calls
her "Gracie"...no mention of the name Anna E. The adoptive parents
renamed her Mary Elizabeth.

If you can find a probate record on your Sarah's parents, there's
probably a list of heirs and perhaps would shed some light on what
her name was. I know males named "John" were often called "Jack" or
"Jay" - at least in our family.
