Our goals as genealogists include making life as easy as possible for those who come after us.

So, my take? For the "primary name" use the name she used. If it was her mother's family name, fine. If
it was her step-grandfather/adoptive father's name, fine. It was the first until she was three, and the
second after that, fine.

Then, of course, you want to make sure, by "additional names" or "memos" or whatever method necessary,
include all of this information.

What you don't want is for Mary, who was known as Mary Smith (her adopted father's name) until the time of
her marriage, to be identified as Mary Jones, just because (a) Jones was her bio mom's name, (b) Jones was
her bio-dad's name, or (c) any other reason. Likewise, the reverse.

So, in genealogy, we don't "pick" names for people, especially based on modern interpretations of what is
"right." We identify people as they identified themselves.

I have a person who legally changed his name to his wife's family name (no, not royalty, and no, not
money, just the seventies attitude), when they were married. So, he is "Sam Smith" for any tags up until
the marriage, "Sam Hername" from then on. I surely hope they never divorce!

So, you see, it doesn't matter why these name changes happen (although it may make a good story someday),
but that we record the information.

Regards,

Pat (in Tucson)

|Here is my dilemma. My mother was adopted by her grandparents.
|
|My g grandmother was not married when she had her first
|daughter (mom's biological mother) so she went by her mother's
|maiden name. My grandmother then had my mother and gave her
|up for adoption to her mother and stepfather. My mom went by
|the name of her step-grandfather. So how do I list her in a
|genealogy chart. By the name her mother went by or the
|surname of her stepfather.
