If there is no secret about it, and we have a similar case in our family, I
simply enter the name of John (Ed Smith) Jones ... and I continue with the
Smith line ... not the Jones line because it is not the direct blood line.
FTM does not kick it out.

The children of John Jones will be carried under his legal name, as will the
grandchildren, etc. Most likely, only your published history will tell the
tale for generations that will come -

You do not say if the mother is the true or adopted mother ...

If you want to do the adopted family - Smith - then it's done on a separate
lineage and can become a 'chapter' in the completed family history.

I have done both lines because there is a birth mother and there was a
"Smith' child, but had there been no birth parent involved, I'd probably
just add a few notes on the adopted parents in the Notes section and let it
go, as that line has no hereditary worth/connection.

Subject: [ROOTS-L] Adopted Child Entry

> How does one enter the data for a child who was born and named at birth,
only to have his name changed when adopted to insure continuity?
> By that I mean, let us say, that a child was born Ed Smith; he was adopted
and renamed John Jones. His children are, of course, named Jones. There
exists a lineage for Smith. On an Ancestry Chart (Pedigree) for a Jones
child what must one do to link with the Smith lineage?
