Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: ROOTS-L Digest V06 #106

To Jan-re: Family Secrets!

The granddaughter DID have the right to know her true ancestry! Not a
doubt in my mind and for several reasons (even though others may have a
different opinion). I am speaking (well typing <g> ) from personal
experience. I think it was justifiable to reveal the truth when she
asked---the truth is always better than the fable. I hope it's not too late
for you to share the facts with her. These things are much more socially
acceptable now than there were in the past so I can't imagine the truth
doing any harm whatsoever at this stage of her life. We are who we are,
which is not always the same as "other people" choose to tell us. I am
speaking as a "birth" Mother. I always wanted to be available to be "found"
should the son I gave birth to ever want to find me and it did happen when
he was 24 years old. Thank God his real parents....the couple who adopted
him at birth... did not feel threatened by our meeting. As for entering him
in my family tree, I added him as my son when he came into my life using his
legal name, with an explanation in my Family Treemaker software under notes.
I also noted the name of his "birth" father who would have approved, even
though he is now deceased.

Pat
