Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Legal and Birth Father

Previous message:
<<What if the parent is married to one person and has another's child. The
Birth certificate reads the Husbands name, but if you follow that line then
you
loose the true lines of the child. Example: John Doe and Mary Doe are the
married couple. Mary has an affair resulting in the illegitimate child. Name
on
birth certificate is Doe. In later years both the mother and Birth father
tell
the child the truth but never alter the birth certificate. So do you note on
the child who the legal father is and do the search on the birth fathers
line. Boy what a can of worms this has presented.>>

My daughters in Texas were born to their father and I, while we were
married. We divorced and they were adopted by my second husband. I didn't
realize that when he adopted them, their official birth registration would be
changed! My second husband was legally married to someone else when they were
born. What a mess! It cannot be changed back despite the fact that the second
husband and I later divorced. Both of them later legally changed their
surname a third time by taking my maiden name. I just made a note about all of
this, mentioning the years in which they were known by each surname. Four
surnames and they have only been married once!
Your situation is the same, but a little different. Just explain it in
your notes.
  P. S. The child isn't illegitimate because his/her mother was married when
he/she was born.
Bettye
