Subject: [ROOTS-L] Unmarried Parents

I was reading the other day an article on this subject.

A child would be named John Father Mother. If the parents married or the
father otherwise recognized and legitimatized the child then the mother
name was dropped and the father name was adopted.

This was an article about watching for potential illegitimate children
whose middle name is a surname.

This is NOT to say that all surnames used as middle names means the child
is illegitimate.

It simply was a custom and can assist in tracking a person later in life
if the father's name was adopted. I would check for a later marriage
record for the parents, or a will in which the father named the children
as his heirs.

Also check the law of the area in which the family lived. Was Common Law
marriage recognized after a period of cohabitation?

Tree Mother
