Seminar: Using Maps & Land Records in Genealogical Research

If you have always wished you knew how to better use maps and land records
in your genealogical research, this is the seminar for you. Wally Huskonen
and John Dailey will share their vast knowledge on these subjects at a
genealogical seminar held at Western Reserve Historical Society on Saturday,
April 8, 2006. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.; the seminar from 10:00 a.m.
- 4:00 p.m. The seminar is divided into four segments:

Why Use Maps in Your Genealogical Research?

Wally will kick off the seminar by discussing how and why to use maps,
atlases, and gazetteers in genealogical and family history research-with
successful examples.

Understanding Land Systems and Records in Ohio and Elsewhere

In this lecture, John will outline the various land record systems in the
United States and how using these records can help you find and learn about
your ancestors.

Plotting Deeds

In a mini-workshop, John will show you how to plot the legal descriptions
found in deeds, with an emphasis on metes and bounds deeds.

Resources for Finding Maps and Land Records

In the concluding session, Wally will review repositories and other sources
for finding maps and related materials and land records, including online
resources.

Wally Huskonen is a Certified Genealogist and a life-long map enthusiast.
John Dailey is a retired surveyor and a student of the history and
development of land records.
