Have you checked the Archives for a military pension for your
ggggrandfather's service in he Mexican War? I found my ancestor had
served in the Mexican war before he & my 2nd gr grandmother married.
After he died in 1875 a law was passed authorizing pensions for
veterans. My gggrandmother filed a claim for his pension and was
granted one. She had to send numerous affidavits to the Gov't. about
his military service....most of which she said she didn't know since
he served before they married. The papers she did submit had much
info I'd never found, such as his birthplace, date of birth, etc. He
was not with the Kentucky troops but with Ohio. Although you say he
may have not actually been in the military, I'd check Archives anyway
if I were you.

There's a book published that might help you. It's INDEX TO MEXICAN
WAR PENSION FILES, Virgil D. White (1989). It lists names of
veterans and/or their widows drawing pensions. Check your library to
see if they have a copy.

Check http://www.dmwv.org "Descendants Mexican War Veterans".
