Subject: [ROOTS-L] Reverse emigration ??

Greetings from Iowa,

A question for you all. Have any of you found family who returned to their
previous homes in Europe?

My gr-gr-grandfather, Thomas Newton was found with his family in the 1841
British Census of Denton (near Manchester), Lancashire.

By 1849, he was widowed with a houseful of children. Thomas and all but two
daughters (Ann and Milly) followed two older children to Pennsylvania. He
was in PA in our 1850 census.

We then lost him -- until the 1871 British census. Data from this census
indicates that Thomas returned to England and lived with daughter, Ann
Darwell and her husband.

My questions: Did this reverse emigration happen often? Have others of you
found evidence of it? With all of his family except 2 daughters in the
States, why did he return to England? I would like to hear from others who
can offer thoughts about this.

Thanks!
Merrily in Iowa
