Subject: [ROOTS-L] Search tips
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

I remember in school learning the rules of sentence structure. Remember the
exercise of diagramming sentences that required you to identify the subject,
predicate, articles, adjectives/adverbs, etc.? Those same concepts can help
in a search of the web. The tips provided here refer to using Google, but
it works the same in any web browser.

If you are seeking information on something, identify the subject of your
interest. For example, if you want to know how to preserve a photograph,
open the web browser and type in Photo Preservation. Easy. Yes, you'll have
some commercial sites appear to sell you their preservation services, but
you'll find a ton of sites that tell you the basics of it so you can do it
yourself.

If you want something more specific, such as how to remove photos from the
old black scrapbook paper our ancestors used, be a little more specific in
the search. For example, typing in "Removing Black Paper from Photos"
resulted in 7,460,000 hits. The second entry was from the National
Archives
http://www.archives.gov/preservation/family-archives/detaching-photos.html.
There are more. Go look :).

The point here is not to be afraid to break the search term "rules" of only
putting in one or two words. If the main terms of the subject of your
research doesn't net you what you want, try just putting in the search
field the question you want. Typing in "How do I remove black paper from
photos" nets me 19,400,000 results; however the ones most pertinetn are
still in the top 20 or so. The Nat'l Archives result above? Still the
second entry.

Some browser may not be able to sort that "finely", but the good ones can.
Also don't worry about small words in your search, like "From" "with" etc.
The browsers will weed them out themselves.

Try it next time you have a question about how to do something. You might
just find your answer withing minutes!
