First of all, not everyone will agree. The important thing is to think
through what you want to share and why and how.

I began a number of years ago by posting my database on the Ancestry
side of the large WorldConnect/Ancestry large shared database. Then I
published sources but not the notes.

However, over time I became annoyed when several individuals downloaded
and merged my ENTIRE database into theirs and resubmitted it giving the
impression the research was theirs. Now I submit gedcom files from the
WorldConnect side where I can submit my database and limit the number of
generations someone can download at one time. They can get the whole thing
if they choose, but they have to think about what they want and need. I
limit what can be downloaded at once, not because I don't want to share,
but because people downloading and combing databases are likely making no
effort to verify information as they use it. Good research is NOT the
process of downloading and combining gedcom files.

No matter which side of Ancestry or WorldConnect you submit to, the
database is yours and you can remove it at any time. Some people have
submitted to FTM for their pedigree cds. I don't recommend this, because
once incorrect information is burned to a cd, it is out there forever. With
a database you can replace, you can limit your mistakes and hopefully
correct them. Yes, we ALL make mistakes.

Generally you should not include living people in your file, though I
have a few living people in mine without specific dates, etc.. I have had
an occasional living person ask me to be included in my file. Generally I
include dead people with notes and sources. I believe providing sources
promotes good research practice. It is hard for someone to check out a
source when the source or sources are not included <g> And I certainly do
not have time to write back to people just to provide my sources.

Personally I have gained some fairly significant material over a period
of several years from people who have found my data on WorldConnect or
Ancestry. People will write and thank me for my efforts and sometimes send
other information my way either in the form of post-em notes to the database
or email. Sometimes one may not hear anything for weeks, and then perhaps
hear from several people in one week.

One thing to remember is that one should replace a database when they
have a new gedcom ready to upload rather than sending duplicate databases of
similar material.

This is a hobby where sharing good, well researched material can be very
helpful. Try to avoid sharing mere guesses because some people will take
speculation as correct information. When I have information on a person
that might be controversial, I make the argument for the conclusion I make
in a person's general notes.

The bottom line is to share accurate material that one has thought
though, hopefully with sources.

When you use large shared databases for clues, verify for yourself what
information you take and add to your own database. None of us does anyone a
favor to perpetuate errors.
