Not True... Read the license agreement.  It says...
"You may not use the Product or permit use of the Product on more than one
(1) computer, computer terminal or workstation at the same time..."

Many users have FTM installed on laptops as well as main computer.
It is perfectly legal as long as you do not run more than one at a time.
I suspect your problem is the unique ID (located in the ftw.ini file.)
That is what tells FTM you are a registered user.
It probably did not transfer over when you copied your data files from one
computer to the other. If it is not there, just copy it from the main
computer to the laptop.
