Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Digest V06 #254, SS# -dim

Dim is correct. When SS was 1st initiated, it was stated that your number
was confidential.
The confidentiality of it was restated by the US GOVERNMENT in the privacy
act of 1974, stating that the number was NOT to be used as identification and
it was illegal to even ASK for it.

I'm told Maryland has a new law as of Jan 06, stating SS#s cannot be used as
ID other than for purposes of tax, social security, Medicare.

I'm also told by my Maryland informant that his SS# is asked for when asking
questions re: his billing at the local phone company, both land line and
cell; electric power company and several other entities. Those companies have
refused to remove his number from his account, and several of them still refuse
to discuss his account with him. One person even told him, re: the privacy
law of 1974, "Well, this is no longer 1974."

One humorous, but stupid, tale he told me....he is definitely a senior
citizen. At his age, In his state, he can take courses at the community colleges
tuition free. He signed up for a
course. They demaned his SS#. When he protested he was told they had to have
it because he might be attending on a student. Logic?
