Actually you have another thing which can be part of this problem. A great 
deal of the information on LDS is from submitters and very little is 
confirmed by sources etc. In my case I have no less than 9 errors on the 
same ancester. One distant relative "guessed" and others picked this up and 
repeated it. That plus the fact that surnames were mis-spelled over a period 
of time or even changed by a family leads to duplication. I recently 
transcribed all the tombstones in a 1738 cemetery and found an example of 
this the father spelled his name Eaches and that's on his tombstone, his 
oldest son spelled it Eachus. This went back and forth for 4 generations (14 
graves in the plot).
