You could make a posting on the message board specifically devoted to Alabama in the Civil. It is located at http://history-sites.com/mb/cw/alcwmb/index.cgi?index. The Alabama Department of History & Archives has an Alabama Confederate Service Cards Database located at http://www.archives.state.al.us/referenc/military.html#CivilWar. Although when I tried to access it, it wouldn't open. Hopefully it is only a temporary problem. The Confederate Cavalry page at http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/CSal-az.html#AL-Cav only lists two 8th Cavalry units that were both organized in 1864. I don't know if there was another 8th Cavalry left off the list or if it was merged with another unit. Another possibility was that it could have been known by more than one name.
