I'm taking a risk here, but oh, well. . .subtlety is not my forte!

When many of us were growing up, an activity we had in elementary school social studies was to make a
family tree. While not the level we genealogists might think of today, these trees certainly sparked an
interest in many children. Maybe only one or two generations, but none the less, it was there. I still
have one done by my brother.

A few (perhaps twenty?) years ago, it became politically incorrect to have the children do family trees,
because you might trample on the feelings of a child who came from a divorced family, was adopted, was
fostered, whose parents had not gotten married, who is here illegally. . . .and on and on. Oh, and the
blessed privacy! Later, in at least some places, I understand, the attitude was modified, and melded into
a broader definition of "family" and I've seen at least two grandchildren do such charts.

As to teaching genealogy, perhaps you could offer to help the school children during one of these
projects. If they have internet access, all the better. It wouldn't be much, probably, because of the
time issue, but it's a start.

Also, the local Parks and Recreation may be interested in this as a summer program.

As long as we view genealogy from the "historical" perspective, rather than the "whoever dies with the
most names wins" perspective, connecting it to the children's broader view of historical context,
everybody wins.

I say -- go for it! Someone has to take over when I'm gone. . . .

|Does anyone know if there are any genealogy classes for kids
|in the schools? I would like to bring it to the schools in my
|area, or at least to the attention of the administrators. Any
|advice welcome. Thanks.
