Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Death Cert. Questions
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

I'd like to get a death certificate on my grandmother's brother who
died in Iowa 1937. His obituary gives his death date and I know where
he's buried.

I have been told that the counties had to send their death records to
Des Moines and the State Vital Statistics has stringent regulations
about who can have copies, like proof of relationship (how I can do
that, I don't know!). I've been told the record will be made
available only to the person's spouse, children, legal parents,
grandparents, grandchildren, siblings or legal guardian (I'm a
granddaughter of the deceased person's sister).

Also required is a government-issued photo ID which has to be signed
in front of a Notary Public.

Both my grandmother and her brother were abandoned by their mother
when they were very young, after their father died and they were
raised by unknowns - or at least the brother who kept his birth name.

Are there any other sources of information I might check to find
information about this man's parents? He was married the first time
in 1900 and his marriage record gave only his father's
name....mother's name left blank. I don't know how he'd have known
his father's name and not his mother's - his father died when he was
3 yrs. old. I suspect his mother re-married and that is the main
point of my research - to find what happened to his mother.

I know this person married a 2nd time but apparently it was not in
the town he died so I've not found that marriage record. I have no
idea where it would have been.

Suggestions on where I can find more information would be
appreciated.

juanita
