Subject: [ROOTS-L] Alvie Davidson - Missouri Death Cert Question

Alvie:

You mentioned you got the extracted record rather than the full record. Did
you order this directly from the county in question or from the State
Archives and pay the $2 fee? How long did it take you to receive it once you
mailed it to them?

I ask because I sent to the Missouri State Archives for 2 death certs back
on April 19 and have not received them, nor have they cashed the check as of
the end of May.

As to not naming parents, have you thought about the fact that perhaps the
parents names weren't listed? I review the microfilms for the records from
Michigan (Oakland and Lapeer Counties, specifically), and sometimes the parents
names are not listed in the record. The names are either left blank or the
word "unknown" is written in the space where the parents names are given.
Without this information, it is a roadblock, but sometimes the names can be
gotten round the back door by going through the census records. Of course, this
won't work if you are back to the 1840s for the parent's deaths. But in
most cases this will work. Deaths in Michigan don't get recorded in most all
counties until 1867 and some of the early entries leave much to be desired.

What's the case in Missouri? I've not done much research in that state so
am in the dark at this point about record availability.

Christie Trapp
