Adrian's suggestions are good advice if the person cannot afford the
Ancestry subscription for home use or has limited census needs. However, I
find the Ancestry every name index with the accompanying schedules (although
obviously not perfect) a wonderful asset to my own research. If I had to
use it in the library, I could not progress research wise nearly as quickly.

I used to have to drive several hours just to see the entire US census
on film, and then that library did not have all the published indexes in
book form. Even at a regional National Archives there are not complete
indexes, since some were never published.

It is always wise to check both Ancestry and Heritage Quest if one
cannot find someone because the indexing can vary between the two sources or
someone can have been missed in one of them. Library resources are
wonderful and allow everyone to participate in this hobby. But US census
research has become so much easier being able to access the schedules in
one's home online.

One hint I have for people who cannot find someone who they believe
should be in a census is to search only on the census year that one is
interested in by the SURNAME without the given name. In either Ancestry or
Heritage Quest, one may see some of the names that have been misinterpreted.
Of course needs to limit to state or county for most surnames because one
might have 100s to 1000s to check.
