Subject: [ROOTS-L] Slave Trade after 1808

Carol,
To the best of my knowledge, and from what I have ready / studied on the WBTS/ACW Yahoo groups is that, although illegal, there was a very little, but still occurring, importation of slaves. So it is very unlikely, but slightly possible, that she came frrom Africa.

You brought up a very interesting thought though about slaves coming over from Carribean locations. Even though, reading the law of 1807 via your links and to the best of my knowledge, it appears that ALL importation of anyone to be sold slaves was to be prohibited. I will have to check it out with my Yahoo groups and see what somebody else may know about this.

Is it possible that she was already a slave owned by someone moving into this country? Reading the law from your links, I cannot really tell. You would have to be a lawyer to interpret it. Would it be even legal to do so? I am not aware of any such cases but I think it would be another 'Dred Scott' type of decision.

An interesting aside to the slave trade is that the slave ships were predominately owned by New Englanders.

(ps: Many thanks for the excellent job you do with the Civil War Unit Files!!!)

Just a couplle of thoughts.
If you receive your messages in Digest form, like I do do please change the topic when you reply to a particular question to reflect which one you are responding to. Unfortunety, most e-mail programs simply make the subject to be re: the particular roots digest number you are replying to.
I would also like to request/suggest deleting all of the other information in the digest that does not apply to your response. This will be greatly appreciated by those with dial-up or limited bandwidth and everyone else reading them.
Thanks in advance for your consideration.
Bob Hoover
