A U.S. law passed in 1807 forbade the importation of slaves after January 1, 1808. Were captive Africans brought to the US as late as 1848? A friend's family history traces one line to an African woman who was taken to Charleston, SC, in March 1848. Is this possible? I'm wondering if the year could be wrong (despite the specific date) or whether she could have been brought from somewhere else, possibly in the Caribbean.
