Subject: [ROOTS-L] searching for Sophia DOLLARS DOYLE MANWARING

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone here can give me some idea of what to do to find
my husband's great grandmother, Sophia (Dollars) Doyle Manwaring.
Here's what I know about her:

She was born 26 Jan 1886 in Murphysboro, Jackson Co., IL (according
to her death certificate). According to the Social Security
Administration, her birth date is 26 Jan. 1884. Her date of death is
31 Jul 1974 at home (1900 Yale Ave.), St. Louis, MO. I have her SS#,
but not sure what to do with it.

She is the daughter of Lonie (Lonnie) Dollars and Ida (Bridget)
Dollars Swartner Hume. She has a step-brother, Odie Swartner.

According to the 1900 census of Murphysboro, Ill., she's 14 and the
stepdaughter of John Hume. John and her mother, Ida, apparently were
married earlier that same year, but I can't find them in the marriage
records for Jackson County.

I've looked in Jackson County and Clinton County, Illinois for a
birth record for Sophia, but no luck. I also have information that
she was born in Missouri, but I don't think that's right. Everything
else I have says she was born in Illinois, although, I could very
well be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time, and definitely not the
last! :-)

She married 16 Jan. 1903 in Breese, Clinton Co., IL, to Peter Doyle.
They were divorced by 1920. She says she was widowed, but I know for
a fact that they were divorced, because my mother-in-law remembers
Peter and she was born in 1934. However, by 1920, Sophia was living
in St. Louis, Ward 2 with 3 children. She says she was born in
Illinois. By 1930, she had a husband and wife boarding with her
family. These were the Manwarings. Apparently Sophia made quite an
impression on Mr. Manwaring, because he's the one she married
sometime later. She's buried in St. Louis by herself -- not by her
first husband or her second husband.

If anyone has any idea of where to go next to find her parents or her
birth certificate, I'd really appreciate it. I'm stuck and don't know
what to do next.

Thanks!

Cathy Wesemann
