Subject: [ROOTS-L] Making indexing corrections on Ancestry census indexing
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

When one clicks on the global search results for a particular name in a
particular census year, one is taken to the page with all the possible
results. Making a choice and clicking there brings one to the summary
screen for the person one has chosen. This summary screen has an orange
circle where you can click to see the actual census page.

To the right of the orange circle is a dialog box that has "Page Tools".
On the 3rd line click "comments and corrections" and it takes you to a
screen where you can put the alternate names with an explanation, then click
to submit.

The alternate spellings one submits show up relatively soon on some of
the screens. They say it will take a few weeks to get to the global
indexing.

I feel it is well worth the effort to take time to send in alternate
names when one is sure that the indexing is wrong. I have seen some
alternate names that have to be pure speculation. But given all the
possible ways errors can creep into the census through misspellings of
census takers and indexing errors, we have a chance to help our fellow
researches if we have knowledge that the indexer did not have.

I didn't realize you could advise them of corrections on census
reports...how would you go about doing that?
