Welcome to the list:). We use abbreviations here as well as any other
field. It is much easier to say GEDCOM than Genealogical Data
Communication. If you don't know what an abbreviation means, try typing it
into a web browser like Google or Dogpile. Better yet, go to
www.google.comand type in the buffer "Genealogy Terms Abbreviations"
(without the " ") and
the first hit will give you this:
http://www.genealogy.com/Glossary/glossary.html. Go to that site and
bookmark it (put it into your favorites).

One of the most important skills to have when using the internet is
learning how to identify keywords to use in search engines to get the
information they want. For me, I formulate a question in my mind (What does
Gedcom mean?), identify the subject and object of the sentence (Meaning and
Gedcom) and use those words in my search engine. After a while you don't
need the first step of formulating a question; it will come to you
automatically.

I understand the frustration with abbreviations, but when the phrase for
which the abbreviation stands is lengthy, people will use the abbreviation
:).
