Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: CEMETERY PLOT LOCATIONS
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

Reading Shirley's e-mail about finding funeral home records made me
think about the time we were searching for my gr grandfather's
gravesite in Colorado. After talking with the funeral home director
in the town where I thought my ancestor had died, I found the records
of the mortuary (1929) were retained by the former owner and were
stashed in his home....under his bed (the person told me!) When I
went to the court house and asked for his death record I was told
they didn't have any information. I asked to personally scan the
sheets myself and found his name ... misspelled. The clerk in the
office didn't seem perturbed that it was not correct, even though I
showed proof my gr grandfather and I had the same last names. I
asked if she couldn't at least put a note on the death record that
the name "may" be different. She ignored me.

When I asked about another relative's burial site in Missouri, I
could only find reference to it when I looked into the settlement of
his estate. He didn't have much to dispose of but probate had been
filed and in the papers were the final expenses of the
deceased....including the cost of his casket and the transporting of
it by horse and carriage to Iowa and to the IOOF cemetery.
