Subject: [ROOTS-L] CEMETERY PLOTS LOCATIONS

Hi, Rooters! The 'trick' in finding a cemetery plot location, who owns
or owned it, can be a
hassle! Some cemeteries are owned by an 'independent business' who
bought land to establish a cemetery or, a funeral home and maintain plot
ownership records;
some cemeteries, burial sites may be listed on a death certificate or
mortuary record. Some cemeteries are owned and maintained by a church
or a 'fraternal club' such as IOOF (Odd Fellows). If that is the case,
contact the church or the fraternal club in the city where burial took
place - the city is generally named on a death certificate. Public
cemeteries are generally owned by
a town or county and in these cemeteries, one may need to find out who
the county commissioner is and he/she should have a record of who is
buried where.

It is frustrating to visit a courthouse only to be told they don't
maintain the burial plot record but 'some' commissioner does and you
gotta contact him...yet they may know know who 'him' is! I've been
there and done that! It is definitely 'hair-pulling time'!

Fortunately, if one does know the funeral home name, one can write to
that funeral home and ask for the information on the burial site.
Include the ''why you want to know".

I 'tracked down' an entire branch of my family by writing to: "The
Oldest Funeral Home in -----------, Washington." I had two clues that
the branch of the family moved 'west' to that particular city, in the
early 1900's.

The funeral home may have been sold several times, but the funeral
records are usually retained/maintained by the new owners. The
funeral home responded to my query with DETAILS!
Included in the details were the 'contact person', a few other living
relatives, the cost of the funeral, including - get this! - the cost of
the coffin and all the 'extras' - lining, pillow, etc., that were in
the coffin of the deceased, down to the cost of the horses and burial
carriage! Talk about being knocked over with a gigantic-size feather!!!

So - don't give up! Keep on searching: someone is 'out there' with the
data you need and are seeking.

Good Luck - Good Searching! Shirley: bobert@i-1.net
