Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Help with writting a post

Jeanette and others,

Even a very well written post with a descriptive subject line may not
bring results because one may not connect with a current subscriber who
happens to have information on the same family. Just think, most of us have
data in our databases covering at least 400 years 1600s to 2006. It does
not hurt to post the same request every few months because list subscribers
change over time.

A descriptive subject line is very important if you want to maximize the
likelihood that people will read what is in the body of the message. Many
people simply delete without reading anything that has reference to a digest
# in the subject line.

An example for a possible subject line from what Jeanette gave in the
body of her message could be:

_?_ RICHARDSON & Leah JOHNSON abt 1800 PA > IN

What you wrote in the body of the message was fine. But you do need to
create a good subject line. You may also want to join lists for Richardson
and the Dearborn, IN location and post there as well.

Incidentally, most of us try to do lookups without charging anything.
Occasionally it does not hurt to hire a researcher with local expertise in
the area in question like for you in Dearborn, IN. Often times there are
volunteer researchers in local historical societies who do not charge much
more than for the cost of photocopying and mailing. I sometimes give a call
to the organization first that I am seeking help from and ask how much money
I should send originally. A small donation to an organization that runs on
a shoestring is always appreciated.

    Good luck..... Margaret Scheffler
