Subject: [ROOTS-L] Find info on old State censuses and substitutes

In Digest #312 someone asked about how to find old censuses. Bill
Dollarhide put together a wonderful series of articles in "Genealogy
Bulletin" in the recent past. Each issue had several states focused on and
listed a multitude of resources for State censuses and their substitutes
(ie. tax records, selective service cards, naturalizations). For those new
to genealogy, please know that States also had censuses, separate from the
federal government, and usually in different years. These articles have
listed statewide items and are divided up by county within each state. For
example, the June 2005 issue had Arizona and New Mexico; the December 2004
issue had Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Dakota Territory, and No. and
So. Dakota. All the states were covered. These issues also had state
timelines. Each item has the FHL call number or the publication it is found
in. Excellent resource!!
The "Genealogy Bulletin" was put out by Heritage Creations. Although
the company is now gone, the publisher is now with Evertons and the
publications should be in some libraries, I would think.
