Subject: [ROOTS-L] RE: GENEALOGY SOFTWARE

I switched from FTM to RootsMagic. I took a sample database (created a
gedcom from FTM of one family line) I then imported that database to several
different software products, Rootsmagic, The Master Genealogist, PAF, and
Brother's Keeper. I then took some information that I needed to add to this
family and added it in each program. Making sure I added 5 different family
groups, census data, other source information to see how each program
handled the information that I tend to use most frequently. I printed
reports that I use frequently to see how well I could customize and change
them. I also tried to create one custom report. From my own experience, I
selected RootsMagic because it felt most natural to me. I know it's a lot of
work, but if you want to see what each program will do I suggest that you do
the same.

Some people like working in and individual view while other like pedigree
format or family groups. Work with each program enough to get a true feel
for it. I gave each program about 2 weeks of time. So I took several months
before deciding to go with RootsMagic. Now that I did, I'm glad I did. I'm
happy with my choice, and I knew going in what information might have to be
reworked.

Just my two cents.
Laura Loding
