Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: Ancestry.com

From: Margaret Miller <almb@sw.rr.com>

I didn't submit anything to Ancestry.com. I was working on the family
privately. Stayed away from the particular site for a period of time.
When I returned, I found there was nothing there that I had posted; it
had all been changed to match what Ancestry.com has in there data base.
Suddenly a woman who had died and been buried in GA. turns up in LA in
the grave of my cousin. Ancestry.com was the only one to my knowledge
other than myself who had access this information.

---
What people need to realize when they are doing genealogical research is
that many other people are also doing the same research. You found your
information someplace that you have used to record your family tree. That same
information is available to others through the same sources you have used to
gather data--birth, marriage, and death records, published family histories,
biographies, census data and many other documents that can be obtained both
online and off.

You say YOU didn't submit data on your family to Ancestry but ancestry has
data posted on your family or has incorrect data. The first thing you need to
do is to establish WHERE at Ancestry you found the data and, assuming it is
user-contributed data you can usually add a Post-em Note (User-added Note) to
the record and note any correction you'd like to make so the submitter can
correct the data. If you found the data in OWT you can edit it if you like.

I still stick to my original position that the BEST way to ensure that
accurate and complete data is published online is to submit it yourself to
RootsWeb's WorldConnect database where you can control it and edit and remove it
anytime you like. The ONLY data you have complete control over is data you
publish under your own name in your own family tree.
