Subject: [ROOTS-L] Digital camera software
Sender: roots-in@roots-l.rootsweb.com

Most digital cameras come with some type of software that assists in
copying the pictures from the media card to the computer hard drive.

I don't know anything about Picassa but I am assuming it is this type of
program. These programs likely have simple imaging editing features as
well. There are a number of this type of program.

To me it sounds as if Helen now has two programs to automatically
download programs. I would just delete the one you don't want, reinstall
the one you want, and see what happens. You probably could do fine without
either of these by trying the approach below. Reboot the computer between
the installs and uninstalls.

Rather than using the type of programs above which may or may not
organize the pictures the way one wants, one can choose to use simply put
the card in the reader, go to Windows Explorer, navigate to the drive letter
of the card, click select all, then copy, and copy their pictures from the
card to the "My Pictures' subfolder of "My Documents". I tend to initially
put mine in a folder for the year and month like "2006 Feb". If the
pictures are routine, general snapshots I may leave them there, or I can
make a more descriptive folder and move them there.

Then to print the pictures and edit them I use Microsoft Picture It
since it is quick and easy. But there are many good programs including a
free one called Irfanview. These come in all degrees of complexity and
cost up to the most well known Adobe Photo Shop.

There are so many ways to do the same task, that it makes it almost more
confusing than if there were only one way.

Generally the brand of camera makes no difference except that they use
different types of media. The general process is the same.

Just like we all do with our genealogy databases (hopefully) everyone
should remember to back up their pictures occasionally so that if the hard
drive should fail, they will not lose their photos. An external hard drive
is good for doing this type of backup.
