Subject: [ROOTS-L] WPA Records

This is the experience I have had in requesting and obtaining W.P.A.
records.

In Feb. 1997 I requested a copy of an ancestor's 1937 Social Security
application. He was born in 1879 and died in 1949.

In the space Name of Employer was written "W.P.A. Project 3561, Chicago,
Cook Co., ILL" The application also included a registration number.

It wasn't until December of 1997, while at the National Archives in
Washington, D.C., that someone recommended I stop and see a Connie Potter - Room 403
and she would have the information. Connie advised me to write a letter to
Civilian Personnel Records Center, 111 Winnebago Street, St. Louis, MO 63118.
I sent a copy of the Social Security Application and requested the W.P.A.
records for my great uncle. They sent me his records from 1935 through 1939.

Subject: WPA Cemetery & Vital Statistics Records

Hi Group,

I searched the archives but unable to find an answer. Is there any specific
place where all the WPA Records were stored or archived? Since it was a
govt program, I was wondering if there was a way to locate them? Were they
housed in each individual county or state?

I have seen some of the cemetery transcriptions, which were very helpful in
locating and verifying information but not in all areas. It seems very hit
and miss on whether the information still exists.

Would love to have a response,
Thanks,
Pam Bray
