Subject: [ROOTS-L] re: Unknown Mayfield search Native American "Tiny"

Sharon,

I live very close to the Indian Reservation. The names Newman and Mayfield
do not sound like Cherokee names. There is a native American rootsweb
discussion board. You might want to post your information there. You can also do
a Dawls roll search for those names. If she was part native American, she may
be an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The tribe is
not a huge tribe. You can also call the Eastern Band of Cherokee Enrollment
office in Cherokee, they have all the enrolled members dating back to before
the "Trail of Tears". Since the early 1950's the members of the EBCI have
received per capita checks, every EBCI member receives a percap check. The main
office would know for sure if Clara Bell Newman was an enrolled Cherokee
Member. This would be a great place to start hunting. Have you searched for Hosea
Henson in any of the Military records online for WW II enlistments. There are
a lot of free websites to search. Information on the death of Hosea Henson,
might give you some clues. Or where he enlisted/buried might help you find the
mother.

Good Luck
