For all the Newbees, a good website to search - just by name for starters, especially if that is all the data you have to go with: http://www.FamSearch.com This is the Mormon Church website. It is absolutely free! One is given good instructions on 'how to'. Another hint is to use a Search Engine like www.google.com or www.askjeeves.com and just plug in the surname - or surname and family --- like SMITH Family or SMITH Family Genealogy.
