by putting * county boundary changes * in your search engine a number of
things will come up ... most will be for a specific time period.

One of the first things I always suggest to my students is that they
immediately do a "county family tree" --- trace its origins and formation
.... if you do not then you are often wasting time looking in the wrong
place!
This is a VITAL part of your genealogical research. *** and it is just as
vital to do this with European boundaries if you are researching your
ancestor's across the pond.

A couple of easy ways is to use books such as Everton's The HandyBook or The
Redbook -- or use that wonderful book by Thorndale & Dollarhid - Map Guide
to the US Federal Censuses 1790-1920. The maps are overlay so you can see
the boundary changes as well as reading.

There is still time to register for 'the' Texas genealogy conference ...
Angelina College Genealogy Conference - 10th year - at Lufkin, Texas.

> I have been using FTM 2006 for some time. However, I tried Legacy and
found many features that I preferred. For instance, when entering a place in
Legacy for a person with an old date i.e. 1650, if I use the current county
name, Legacy comes back with a message stating that county did not exist
during the life of said person.
> I would like to find a website where one could look up these old counties
compared to new names.
