Growing up I spent a lot of time at the library, my mother loved to
read...There are a lot of services offered by libraries people aren't aware of. I
have the reference desk phone number on speed dial, they can answer all sorts
of questions. You can request census records and such on microfilm, books
from the state archives...all kinds of interesting things. Tell the reference
librarian what you want or are looking for and they can help you find it. And
there are lots of things you can find on the library's website. I look on
the websites of libraries in the areas I am researching as well. I have had
some very helpful librarians point me in the direction of someone who can help
me with research in their area. Oh, and another hint. Most libraries have
internet access available not only to those with a library card at that
particular library both other people as well. If you are traveling and need to
check email or whatever, you can go to the local library and go online there.
My friend did that while we were in Oregon last week, she got 15 minutes
online as a guest...enough time to check email and a couple of websites of local
restaurants and theaters.

try this list ..... http://www.eogen.com/HeritageQuestOnline

Also, check online for all the libraries near you to make sure none are
subscribers. With a local library card I can use my home computer to access
through our online library catalog ... http://www.hpl.lib.tx.us/index.html

HINT TO ALL: All too often I find that people do not know that their
library is online -- or have not taken the time to go to the main site and
really have a look around! It is surprising to me how many times someone
asks me a question and when I ask them if they checked that out on line at
HPL, they have 'that blank stare,' and upon conversation I find that they
really don't know all the wonderful things that's right there for the
taking. A lot more than just Heritage Quest. Many things online at the
Houston Public Library is open to all - library card of not. Give us a try
... notice on the bottom right of the screen there is Special Collections
.. Clayton Library and from that site you can go to Clayton Library Friends
(some wonderful articles under CLF Newsletter that can be printed out if you
find one of special interest). Check your public library for an online
catalog --- check your local and are colleges/universities --- wonderful
stuff!
