Subject: [ROOTS-L] Englelirecht = Englebrecht?

I'm betting that the handwritten word is not "Englelirecht" which is not a
recognizable German word, but is instead "Englebrecht" -- a well known German
surname. If the handwritten "b" is loopy or spiky or isn't completely
closed, it would be easy to read it as "li."

Is Englebrecht the name of a local cemetery, or the name of a local farm
family who might have had a private burial ground? Perhaps the name of the
Lutheran pastor who buried your ancestor?

Good luck with your continued research.

Does anyone know the meaning of the word, 'Englelirecht'? Is this a German
word? I do not know anyone who speaks the German language and I haven't found
a forum where this sort of query can be posted. I would like to know the
meaning of the word.

I am seeking information about an ancestor who was born in Germany and died
in North Carolina in 1841. I found an old handwritten record which seems to
indicate that he was buried in a family burial ground although he was a member
of the Lutheran church. The word, Englelirecht' was written beside my
ancestor's name. Can anyone translate this word to English for me? Thanks.
