Subject: [ROOTS-L] Re: ROOTS-L Digest V06 #284

Carole,

I would be very interested in these letters, too. I'm researching an F.
S. Irby (I believe it's listed as P. S. Irby in the cemetery records)
who is buried in Woodlawn.

Subject: Elmira Prison Camp

Approximately 3,000 Confederate soldiers who died at the Elmira Prison
Camp were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery by a former slave named John W.
Jones. According to some historical reports, Mr. Jones wrote letters to
some of the families in regard to the burials. I would like to know if
any of these letters still exist, either held privately or in any local
museums down South?
