  New Four Lane Route 66

The year was 1951 the month was November; the event was the Grand Opening and Dedication of the NEW FOUR LANE ROUTE 66 from Yukon, Oklahoma to El Reno, Oklahoma. Governor Roy J. Turner and Senator Rinehart Of El Reno Cut the Ribbon that was to change History for all times. I remember both Gov. Turner and Sen. Rinehart gave a speech in front of the new American Legion building.
There was a big Parade down Main Street (Route 66). There were lots of foreign made cars in that parade. I believe that was the first time I recall seeing so many foreign cars in America.
The reason I remember this event so well is that I was a Pfc. In the Air Force and My brother ¡°BUD¡± Orville Lester Odle was in the Navy and we were both home on leave and my Uncle Wayne and Aunt Gertie Todd had driven to Yukon, Oklahoma from their home in West Chester, California in their new 1951 Oldsmobile 88.
I was standing at the North West corner of 6th Street and Main St. (Route 66) in front of the Yukon Hatchery talking to DEL JONES, SPIDER LEADY, and BESSIE SELEMENT. My seven-year-old sister CAROL SUE ODLE went to the Parade with me. She was carrying her new Madame Alexander Doll that I bought her at the Base PX. We saw a motorized carriage with a long stick in the center to steer it.
I think everyone in town turned out for this event. The Yukon Marching Band and the El Reno Marching band were in the parade. My Uncle Elmer ¡°Ott¡± and Aunt Nan Schwab from El Reno was in town.
My brother Buddy and I decided it would be great fun to wear each other¡¯s uniform on out double date with the Wright sister Goldie and Irene. I was a much better looking sailor than I was an Airman.
1951 was an exciting year for me; I had never flown in an airplane until I joined the Air Force. I was a Flight Engineer on a B-25 Bomber. I sat in the nose section and spotted other aircraft for the Pilot.

It was in 1951 that I saw my very first Jet Air Craft. A F-94. I also got to fly in a B-17 Bomber. At Vance Air Force Base in 1951 we had B-25 Bombers, T-6 and T-8 Aircraft.
My best childhood Pal Earl Ed. Novak and I stopped by his cousins FRANK & ESTER FANNY¡¯S HATCHERY located on the South West Corner of 7th St. and Main St. to visit with them. Earl Ed. And I ate prune, poppy seed and pineapple Kolace that his mom Aunt Frances Novak/Yanda had made. Before the after noon was gone Earl Ed and I had some of my Grandmother Adde Tice/Odle¡¯s meringue pie and her traditional German Prune Cake.
There were always something going on ¡¯round the Mill town of Yukon, Oklahoma. And there were always Good People, Good Food, and Good times. When Earl Ed and I stopped by my folks house my little brother Jimmie Lee Odle and Larry Orr were playing with our dog ¡°Buster.¡±
Earl Ed. And I stopped by the First Baptist Church to see one of our Grade School Music teachers Irene Thomas/Burris who was teaching piano lessons.
I have many fond memories of life growing up in Yukon, Oklahoma.
