Subject: [ROOTS-L] Resources for dating clothing

One resource often overlooked in dating old photos is a university's theatre or textiles department. Many schools have faculty and resources that are related to the history of clothing styles and textiles. Also any national fashion institue should be able to assist or put you into the right direction. Another local option would be the history museum or historical society that deals with preservation of textiles.

I took a year off from traditional college to attend a fashion business institute and one of the required courses was the history of clothing which we had to learn what styles were in what years.

Another resource is contacting a labour union that specifically covers the wardrobe department for films and plays. They might also be able to direct you to an individual who can assist.

I have learned to ask as many questions of any resources you can. If they say no, just move on until you find someone helpful.

  best wishes.

  Baldwin
