Subject: [ROOTS-L] RE: Ferguson/1840 census/immigration

ANSWER TO BELOW:

Jim,
Even if the correct Edward Ferguson could be found in the 1840 Census it
really wouldn't tell you much since there is only the name of the head of
household and marks as to ages of males and females. No other names are given.

However the 1900 Census that Edward Ferguson is in is full of data.

He is listed as being born January 1812 in Ireland, that he immigrated in
what looks like 1832 and had been in the United States for 68 years. Also, he is
living with his son Edward Ferguson, age 60, born March 1840 in
"Pennsylvania"!!

So he would have most likely been in Pennsylvania in that 1840 Census or at
least "Probably"!!

Edward Jr.'s wife, Louise, was born December 1845 in Indiana. The only child
of Edward and Louise is a daughter Charlotte S., age 37, born July 1862.
Edward Jr. and Louise had been married 39 years, 3 children, 1 living. Those are
questions they never asked a man even though he was a widower - grin.

Edward Sr. was in Indiana 1850. By checking the 1850 and 1860 you might
find more children for Edward Sr. and where they were born. That would allow you
to pretty well trace when they were in what state and at what period of time.

Hope this helps, Gretchen

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

Subject: Ferguson/1840 census/immigration

I know from the 1900 census that my guy, Edward FERGUSON,born in 1812,
immigrated from Linster, Ireland in 1832. By 1850 and until his death in
1902, he lived in Morgan County, Indiana. But I don't know where he was in
1840, and would much appreciate it if someone with access to an 1840 census
index would find him for me. That might give me some ideas for searches to
find his arrival and marriage in the US. I have access to the 1840 census
images thru Heritage Quest, just not an index. Any help appreciated.
